Hello,
Welcome to the forum. In a female, there are two ovaries present and their function is to produce ova or egg
and to mature them each month. The maturing egg is in a follicle cyst that grows to about one half inch in
diameter. Then near ovulation, there is a surge in LH hormone which causes the ovary to release the egg by
breaking the follicle. This egg lives only for 24 hours and the rest of the follicle forms the corpus luteum.
If the egg is not fertilized, the corpus luteum will involute and there is decrease in the levels of hormones
(estrogen or progesterone) in blood. This causes shredding of the lining of the uterus (endometrium) resulting
in menstruation. In your case, since you have had your periods, so there is no scope for any fertilization of
the egg. The next egg or ova will be released in the next menstrual cycle or next month through the process
described above. Your this month’s egg has not fertilized and has been shed since you have had your menses.
The coming month, a new egg will be released and it will be fertilized only if you have any unprotected
intercourse in the near future especially near ovulation. I hope this helps Take care and please do keep me
posted if you have any additional doubts. Kind regards.
