Priced at $15.00

hello, i had sexual intercourse with my boyfriend on saturday night but something happened and the condom we were using came of during intercourse. he did not ejaculate inside me and we stopped when we realised. I have not been for emergency contraception as I knew I would be starting my period and have started menstruating today. This will seem like a stupid question but as this happened during my current menstrual cycle and my period has come this month another egg hasnt been released yet has it? doesnt this happen after i have finished menstruating? so as I have my period now this means I'm not pregnant and next months egg wont have possibly been fertilized?!

Hello, Welcome to the forum. In a female, there are two ovaries present and their function is to produce ova or egg and to mature them each month. The maturing egg is in a follicle cyst that grows to about one half inch in diameter. Then near ovulation, there is a surge in LH hormone which causes the ovary to release the egg by breaking the follicle. This egg lives only for 24 hours and the rest of the follicle forms the corpus luteum. If the egg is not fertilized, the corpus luteum will involute and there is decrease in the levels of hormones (estrogen or progesterone) in blood. This causes shredding of the lining of the uterus (endometrium) resulting in menstruation. In your case, since you have had your periods, so there is no scope for any fertilization of the egg. The next egg or ova will be released in the next menstrual cycle or next month through the process described above. Your this month’s egg has not fertilized and has been shed since you have had your menses. The coming month, a new egg will be released and it will be fertilized only if you have any unprotected intercourse in the near future especially near ovulation. I hope this helps Take care and please do keep me posted if you have any additional doubts. Kind regards.

Hi, Thanks for writing in this forum. Dr. Rohit has rightly stated that the chances of pregnancy are absent. I will try to explain you how? During each menstrual cycle, a woman’s ovaries release an egg, or ovum, this process is called ovulation. Generally, this takes place on an average of about 14 days before the start of a woman’s monthly period. Even for women with regular periods, this timing or duration can vary from month to month. After ovulation the egg moves toward the uterus through the fallopian tubes. If there is a sperm available, with all the right conditions, here is where the process of fertilization may take place. An unfertilized egg may live for about 24 hours and if does not get fertilized during this duration, it will be shed during the next menstrual period, along with the uterine lining. Sperm can survive for an average of two or three days inside a woman’s body under normal conditions. All these facts are important to state that in a lady with normal cycles there is a fertile period, which could be calculated depending on the length of cycles. So if fertilization does not occur the hormone levels will drop, sending signals to the brain to start menses. In your case, the sperms won’t be able to survive for 14 more days, so no chances of pregnancy are there. Hope this helps. Thanks and regards.
