Abnormal pap smears showing Ascus and HPV and 3 months later HSIL with HPV

Asked by Unregistered (Female; 33; 10120; Endometriosis, diagnosed in 1998 with laparoscopy No pregnancies no other medical issues; Relevant drugs:Yasmin, but just stpped taking it 2 weeks ago ) on Mon 18, Aug 2008 01:10pm

I'm 33yrs old 3 months ago I had a pap showing ASCUS cells and HPV. had endocervical biopsy, negative. 3month f/u pap showed HSIL and HPV . I had another biopsy (cervical and endocervical)today. I want to get pregnant, but I not sure how at risk I am for cancer? Do these changes typically occur this fast? How accurate is the pap? How is it possible that the pap shows abnormal cells and the biopsy was neg? which is correct. Also I have had an vaginal odor for several years that persists even after different treatments Metronidazole oral and vag, Cleocin vag. Can this be from the abnormal cells or cancer?

Answer by Dr Noopur S, MD (doctor) on Mon 01, Sep 2008 07:06am:

Hi, How are you? Abnormal cells on Pap smear have more chances of becoming cancerous than the normal cells. HSIL stands for high grade intraepithelial lesion. These cells are usually precancerous. Please discuss this issue with your OBGYN as only the doctor after colposcopic examination can determine how at risk of cancer are you. Abnormal cells are not usually associated with foul vaginal odour. Take care!
