Hello. I am 28 years old and I went off birth control in September 2008, after being on it for 12 years. I had a regular period 6 weeks later (ending on Nov.1, 2008), but not one since. So, it's been about 7 months. I've taken many home pregnancy tests, all of which are clearly negative. I have no symptoms of pregnancy, either. I've done some research on the internet and this seems to be a fairly common thing after going off the pill. I have gained about 15 lbs over the past several months, but I also quit smoking a year ago and I haven't been doing Weight Watcher's or exercise like I had been the past couple years. I haven't been to the doctor yet, but now I'm wondering if I should. I guess since I feel absolutely fine, I don't think about it. What would be your opinion? Should I go to the doctor or is this something that I can wait out? Thanks so much!

Answer by Dr Rowena S, MD (doctor) on Thu 28, May 2009 12:53am:

Hi, How are you? It is normal to have irregular cycles after getting off they stop taking the Pill. Ovulation may occur a month or more after until the hormones normalize. In your case, I recommend that you have this evaluated by your gynecologist for proper management and to rule out other causes of amenorrhea (or absence of menstruation) such as stress, hormonal imbalance, certain medications, thyroid malfunction, uterine scarring or pituitary problems. I hope this helps. Best regards.
