Hi! I can understand your concern. In your case this could be post pill amenorrhea that results from prolonged
use of contraceptive pills and depot shots. The periods stop because of suppression of pituitary gland in the
brain by the contraceptive pills or depot shots. Generally the periods return in 6 months time. If they do
not then your gynecologist will run a complete hormone panel including thyroid hormones and FSH, LH,
prolactin, androgen hormones or male hormones and estrogen hormones.
If this is not the cause then stress whether emotional or physical can delay the period. Hypothyroidism, and
polycystic disease of the ovary can cause delayed or missed periods. Pituitary tumors secreting prolactin can
also cause such problems. Anemia and poor diet are other reasons for delayed or missed periods. Unexplained or
sudden weight gain or weight loss are the other factors to be looked into.
Since you want to start a contraceptive pill, you will first need to consult your gynecologist and get a
complete hormone analysis done and all other factors analyzed. This will be followed by pills to start your
periods. Hence until you meet your gynecologist, you will need to either abstain from sex or use alternative
methods such as condoms.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
