Hi, I was taking Yaz birth control for three years. I've been off of it for two months now. I've been waiting to start a new birth control the Sunday after my next period begins, but I haven't had a period since I went off of the Yaz... (two months ago.) I've taken three different pregnancy tests so I'm pretty sure I'm not pregnant. Also, I've been completly abstinent for the last month. Minor spotting the first week of June is the last I can recall... It's been so long since I've had a real period now I'm starting to get concerned. Because I'm going out of town next week I'm not able to speak with a doctor until the 30th... Any advice or opinions would be great. Thank you!

Hi! I can understand your concern. In your case this could be post pill amenorrhea that results from prolonged use of contraceptive pills and depot shots. The periods stop because of suppression of pituitary gland in the brain by the contraceptive pills or depot shots. Generally the periods return in 6 months time. If they do not then your gynecologist will run a complete hormone panel including thyroid hormones and FSH, LH, prolactin, androgen hormones or male hormones and estrogen hormones. If this is not the cause then stress whether emotional or physical can delay the period. Hypothyroidism, and polycystic disease of the ovary can cause delayed or missed periods. Pituitary tumors secreting prolactin can also cause such problems. Anemia and poor diet are other reasons for delayed or missed periods. Unexplained or sudden weight gain or weight loss are the other factors to be looked into. Since you want to start a contraceptive pill, you will first need to consult your gynecologist and get a complete hormone analysis done and all other factors analyzed. This will be followed by pills to start your periods. Hence until you meet your gynecologist, you will need to either abstain from sex or use alternative methods such as condoms. Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

Hi , you must be really concerned . As Dr Kokil has said, you may be having post-pill amenorrhoea. Menses can however be induced by taking progestins . Less than 1 % of women have a post pill amenorrhoea lasting at least 6 months. 80 % of women resume normal menstruation within 3 months of stopping the pill. This amenorrhoea is due to suppression of Hypothalamic- pituitary function. Other causes of amenorrhoea however need to be excluded such as hyperprolactinemia, hypothyroidism, excessive weight gain, excessive weight gain etc. Hence the levels of FSH, LH & estrogens will be low. Hence I suggest you consult your gynaecologist for an examination & hormone assay. In the meantime you may use condom contraception. Hope this helps . Keep us posted in case you have any other doubts . Take care & warm regards.
