Hi Coral,
How are you? Edema or excess fluid that collects in ther tissue is normal especially during the third
trimester. This is because you are retaining more water and your uterus puts pressure on your pelvic veins and
your vena cava. This manifests in the ankles and feet and sometimes, the hands. Lying on your left side may
help relieve the pressure on your veins. However, in your case, significant swelling in the hands may need to
be checked by your doctor to rule out conditions such as preecclampsia. Other symptoms that you should watch
out for include swelling in the face or puffiness around the eyes, excessive or sudden swelling of the feet
and ankles. Take care and best regards.
