	I am 20 weeks pregnant and have a bad ear ache (from an alergy related sinus infection I think). Can I take an antihistamine? (My doctor cannot see me until Friday.)

	Answer by Dr Rowena S, MD (doctor) on Tue 12, May 2009 11:18pm: Hi, Unfortunately, there is insufficient evidence to state that antihistamine medications are safe to be used in pregnancy. In later pregnancy it is thought that high doses may have toxic effects. Medication should be used in pregnancy only when the benefit to the mother is thought to be greater than the risk to the fetus. COnfirm your diagnosis of allergy related sinus infection first before taking any medications. Talk to your doctor about this for management suited for you. Take care and keep us posted.
