I am experiencing irregular menstrual cycles - what causes this?

What causes irregular menstrual cycles? I have experienced bleeding/spotting between periods. And it appears that I am going to experience a missed period this month. I have taken several home pregnancy tests which all shows negative.

Answer by Dr Smitha M, MD (doctor) on Mon 01, Sep 2008 08:38pm:

Hi, Irregular periods can occur due to irregular routine, inadequate diet, stress, weight loss, hormonal imbalances, growths in the uterus, anemia, etc. If you have been experiencing irregular periods and spotting only in the past couple of months, it is possible that the reason could be stress or diet and weight changes. If you have been having increasing problems with reference to periods and weight gain as well it is likely that the problem could be due to a condition called polycystic ovarian disease that causes alterations in ovulation and hormonal regulation. You should consult a gynecologist who will help diagnose your problem based on physical examination and the required tests. Additionally, do note that certain contraceptive pills and devices can also cause periods to be irregular. Do keep us posted on any further doubts in this regard.
