Dear Adeniyi tina if your cycles are regular then ovulation in a menstrual cycle occurs in the middle of the
cycle, so one week before or one week after the day of ovulation is considered to be fertile period .A person
can get pregnant if she has sex in the fertile period. There can be number of causes for not conceiving
besides not having sex in the fertile period like infection(tuberculosis, pelvic inflammatory disease);ovary
disorder due to Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome which affects ovulation, primary ovarian failure ;hormonal
imbalance; thyroid problems; damage to fallopian tubes; endometriosis(deposits of the inner lining of the
uterus in the pelvic cavity);uterine causes like fibroid or poly blocking the fallopian tube; cervical
stenosis (cervix cannot produce the best type of mucus for sperm mobility and fertilization or the cervical
opening may be closed preventing any sperm from reaching the egg) and sperm abnormality like low count, low
motility etc in males. You can go for a complete hormone profile, thyroid profile, blood test, ultrasonography
to check for ovarian cyst, hysterosalphingography (to check tubes)and semen analysis for males. There are
number of fertility drugs, but first the diagnosis of the reason is important. Consult a Obstetrician and
Gynaecologist. Take care.
