	I have been taking large amounts of prescription pills for pain and anxiety (lortab, xanax, valium)and recently found out that I am five weeks pregnant. Please tell me how these things will affect my child. I have stopped taking them as soon as I found out but I am very worried, please tell me all the risks and possible defects, Thank you. Rebecca

	Answer by Dr Bhupinder K, MD (doctor) on Mon 25, May 2009 06:09am: Hello, Lortab is a category C drug and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women but babies have been shown to be physically dependent and withdrawal symptoms may be present to this drug.Xanax is FDA category D drug and can cause birth defects in an unborn baby.Valium has been found to have teratogenic effects on the fetus and neonatal flaccidity, respiratory and feeding difficulties and withdrawal symptoms.I would suggest a gynecologist’s evaluation and thorough investigations as soon as possible.
