I have had a blood test which says I am on the menopause but the receptionist said my oestrogen level was high, I recently had a minor TIA and had to come off the contraceptive pill. I am 49. can you tell me what this means please?

Answer by Dr Veena, MD (doctor) on Thu 10, Sep 2009 11:00am:

Hi, TIA or transient ischemic attack is a condition where there is transient blockage of the blood vessels in the brain interrupting blood supply to that part of the brain and causing symptoms related to that. Blocking of the vessels can happen due to thrombus formation or due to spasm of vessels or due to hemorrhage. Use of estrogens increases the risk of clot formation which can lead to these TIA attacks. You are in menopause state and on birth control pills, which have caused the TIA attacks. I would recommend that you get a Lipid profile done and visit a physician for further assistance on this. Best.
