I have had two miscarriages within the last one year. My blood test came out positive about three weeks ago. So, I went to my doctor. She ordered an ultrasound, which revealed a fetal sack of only 0.64 centimeters and no cardiac activity. The blood test had placed me in 4 weeks. The doctor said I should have another ultrasound in two weeks. I am only about 90 lbs, 38 years old and 5' 4". My question is as follows: 1. Is that fetal sack size at 4 to 5 weeks okay? Is it normal? 2. What are the chances that there will be heartbeat at the next ultrasound? I am not getting any younger and I want to be a mother. Please guide.

Answer by Dr Smita Sarwan (doctor) on Sat 05, Mar 2011 09:33pm:

Hi, The size of festal sac more than 6mm in 4 weeks pregnancy is normal but more than it is not considered good. The foetus heart can be visualized in 6-8 weeks of pregnancy. The heartbeat is usually not seen so early. So you will have to wait for 2 weeks and then again go for ultrasound. If everything is normal you can continue with pregnancy. You should also discuss it with you gynaecologist as well. Hope it helps. Take care and keep posting.
