No Menstrual cycle in 4 months and I want to conceive a child

Asked by Unregistered ; 9116 ) on Thu 01, May 2008 09:27am

I have not had a menstrual cycle in about 4 months. I was not sexually active, so pregnancy was not the problem. My cycle has always been irregular. I recently got married, and I want to have children, but I am afraid that something is wrong because we have not conceived yet. What should I do?

Answer by Dr Paul S, MD (doctor) on Thu 01, May 2008 08:19pm:

Good day. A woman's menstrual cycle is unique for each and every individual. The "normal" menstrual cycle that is described in the medical and obstetrical books is usually more of the exception rather than the rule. There can be several causes why your menstrual cycle is irregular and the problem is usually an imbalance in the hormones. This irregularity may have to be further distinguished between "ovulatory" (which means that you ovulate, but for some reason the menses does not ensue after 2 weeks) or "anovulatory" (you don't ovulate at all). It is very hard to tell just by the irregularity of one's menses whether ovulation indeed occurred or not. And even if you indeed ovulated, it will be very hard to tell exactly what time that occurred. There are fertility doctors (usually obstetricians) that can analyze this condition. It would start off first with anatomic evaluation of your reproductive tract (ultrasound examination), then the functional evaluation. I suggest you have yourself seen by an obstetrician with a subspecialty training in fertility so that you can be worked up. I hope you and your husband will have a baby soon. Regards and God bless.
