Asked by abalo_gr (Female; 33 ) on Wed 11, Nov 2009 03:18am

What do you expect expectant mothers to do before pelvic examination?. what should one expect during and after pelvic examination?.I have chronic pharyngitis which became worse after I conceive.I am 32weeks pregnant, been scheduled for Pelvic exam at 36week since I had a C-Section with my 3 year old son. I am afraid of what might happen during delivery given my health condition

Answer by Dr Rowena S, MD (doctor) on Thu 12, Nov 2009 09:04am:

Hi, How are you? A pelvic exam is a way for doctors to look for signs of illness in your pelvis. This includes further evaluation of the external genital organs, uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes, ovaries, bladder and even the rectum. You can expect to feel a little discomfort, but you should not feel pain. The exam itself is around 10 minutes. The cause of your chronic pharyngitis should be determined for proper management. There are medications that are safe to take during pregnancy. During a typical pelvic exam, you will be asked to lie on your back and relax. Speculum, pap smear and bimanual examinations are done. A speculum is opened to widen the vagina so that the vagina and cervix can be seen.Sometimes, a rectal examination is also done. Talk to your doctor about this. Take care and best regards.
