Pregnancy and Birth Control...Could I be Pregnant?

	I am 18 years old and I am on the Nuva ring (birth control). Is it likely that I could be pregnant since I had unprotected sex 3 times this month, once on the day after ovulation? My period is due September 11th and I took a pregnancy test today (September 1st). It said negative. I am concerned that I have not produced enough hcg levels if I am pregnant to detect the pregnancy. Although I have had some stomach pain a couple of days ago. What should I do?

	Answer by Dr Smitha M, MD (doctor) on Mon 01, Sep 2008 11:39pm: Hi, It is unlikely that you could be pregnant if you are on contraception with the nuva ring, if the ring has been in place as required. The nuva ring releases low doses of estrogen and progestins to prevent ovulation. The contraceptive efficacy of the ring is not affected if the ring is out of the vagina for a duration within 3 hours. The ring as a form of contraception has a 99% efficacy rate. It is probable that your period will start on the 11th as it normally does, but if it does not then you will need to take a pregnancy test and follow up accordingly.
