Pregnancy/hormone question

	I have been experiencing a few medical issues recently & am just interested to know whether or not I may be pregnant. My symptoms include hot flashes,abdominal swelling, abdominal pain, aching legs & backache. I have been having normal periods but, have been experiencing breakthrough bleeding. I do have unprotected sex with my boyfriend but, he always withdraws before he ejaculates. Is there any chance I could be pregnant?

	Answer by Dr Rowena S, MD (doctor) on Sun 08, Mar 2009 01:42am: Perimenopause is a transition period that precedes menopause which is symptomatic of hormonal imbalances and may present as irregular periods, heavy bleeding, hot flashes, headaches, vaginal changes, hair loss, weight gain, or extreme emotional distress. However, withdrawal type of birth control is not always effective, so I recommend home pregnancy test to determine if conception has occurred or not.
