Hi, a woman ovulates 14 days before menstruation, sperm can survive in the vagina for 3-5 days and the ovum
can survive up to 24 hours. If her cycles are regular then one week before or one week after the day of
ovulation is considered to be fertile period. If she has had her menses on 26th, sex on 17th should not cause
pregnancy as it coincides with the 22nd day, but if her ovulation is delayed in this cycle there can be
pregnancy. Withdrawal method is not safe because when the man is in the vagina he secretes pre-ejaculatory
fluid during arousal which contains sperms and one sperm is required to fertilize a egg. Delay in menses can
be due to pregnancy, stress, hormonal imbalance, imbalanced diet, depression, thyroid problems, adrenal gland
problems, prolactinoma, anorexia nervosa, poly cystic ovarian disease etc. A delay of 7 days is however
considered normal. She can get a pregnancy test done to confirm. Get in touch with a doctor for further
assistance. Take care.
