Answer by Dr Rowena S, MD (doctor) on Mon 11, Aug 2008 02:37pm:

Hi, Thank you for the question. Among the more than 4000 compounds present in cigarette smoke, two compounds are especially harmful: nicotine and carbon monoxide which may lead to serious complications such as stillbirth, premature delivery, and low birth weight. These toxins reduce the baby's supply of oxygen which may lead to abnormal growth and development. Even just one or two cigarettes will significantly reduce oxygen for the baby and a pack-a-day will increase the chance of losing about a half-pound from a baby's birth weight which could also have negative effects such as improper lung development. Studies show that children whose mothers smoked during pregnancy are especially vulnerable to asthma and childhood cancer, and have double or even triple the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Aside from this, children of pregnant smokers are especially likely to have learning disorders, behavioral problems, and relatively low IQs. I hope this helps. It is very important for pregnant mothers to be healthy by eating right, keeping fit and avoiding substances that could harm the unborn baby.
