Small red bumps spreading over body

Asked by Unregistered (Male; 9; 12245; nothing significant; Relevant drugs:not applicable ) on Wed 24, Dec 2008 11:54pm

My 9 mos old son has developed small red bumps on the front and back of his legs. To a lesser degree, he has the same small red bumps below his lower lip. He appears to have bumps about to break through on his stomach and back too. His bumps do not look like the chicken pox shown in online example photos (he has many more bumps, and his bumps do not look the same). The bumps began showing up 24-36 hours ago. He has not been running a fever. He has been irritable and has not been sleeping as well as normal. He also vomitted once today at daycare after taking milk...no repeats for the rest of the day though. He seems to have less appetite. Even though it's Christmas Eve, we are inclined to take him to the emergency room (since his bumps seem to be spreading, and he's so irritable). At the same time, we don't want to overreact. Finally, we have family (including young children and a pregnant woman) scheduled to visit tomorrow. So, we are concerned that he may be contagious. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, It could be eczema, sweat dermatitis, allergic reactions or insect bites. You need to wash the areas several times with fresh water. Do not use any cosmetic products at the sites. Apply calamine lotion at the site of the lesions and see if it helps. You could take some oral antihistamine medications like cetrizine or loratadine. You need to maintain a good personal hygiene . Anti-itch drugs, often antihistamine, may reduce the itch during a flare up of eczema, and the reduced scratching in turn reduces damage and irritation to the skin. For mild-moderate eczema a weak steroid may be used (e.g. hydrocortisone or desonide), whilst more severe cases require a higher-potency steroid (e.g. clobetasol propionate, fluocinonide). Eczema can be exacerbated by dryness of the skin. Moisturizing is one of the most important self-care treatments for sufferers of eczema. Keeping the affected area moistened can promote skin healing and relief of symptoms. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eczema Let us know if you need any further information. It would be advisable to consult a skin specialist for the symptoms and a proper clinical examination. Let us know if you need any other information and post us on how he is doing. Regards.
