Asked by chauntelle (Female; 34 ) on Thu 26, Nov 2009 03:10pm

Hi. I am female age 34 mother of 2 boys aged 14 & 9. At age 26 sterlized by filopian procedure (had many complications but cant remember all - this was reason for sterilization). Since I started mentruation at early age of 11 I have always bled heavy with severe cramps to the point of contraction like pains. My bleeding has most times been very clotty - causing shower drain & bath drains to block on many occasion or leaving me in embaressing situations. November 2008 to Feb 2009 I bled non stop - this was 4 months of non stop bleeding & periods from hell - the pains from this were worse than usual sometimes leaving me unable to walk. I then stopped for about 3-4 days during 1st week in March 2009 after that I started bleeding daily and have not stopped since. Some days are heavy some days are medium to light but every day I bleed. My blood goes from pitch pitch black (without clots now) to brown to pink to blood red (not specifically in that order). I have gained 44 kg in 8 months have become depresseed & literally my personality has changed to the complete opposite. My mother has agressive tissue cancer type/stage 2 and has been fighting it since 2005 it is also not limited to her breasts. Her specialist at that time asked us to please get tested due to the fact that the type of cancer my mother has is passed or can get passed over by gene. My sister went had test and they found cancer in her uterus - they operated removed and treated. She had to wait three months to be retested & was told its clear. After a year it reappeared and was spreading fast so they gave her a historectomy. I have never been to a doctor since - I know this is bad - but I am so scared of having to go through what my sister brother and mother have and am worried I get told the same so I have stayed away. It has just really reached a point where I cannot go on anymore. Have gone from extremly active sex drive to zero from being hapy to hiding away in my home. My fiance suggested I try the injection to stop the bleeding - I then have been on Depro-prevera (not sure of spelling) am going onto my 3rd injection but nothing has changed! If I try exercise for my weight my bleeding gets worse and if I do have sex the morning after leavs me with a heavy bleed for a few hours & then returns to just bleeding. Please help I cant take this anymore. I have now decided to see a gyneocologist but am worrid about costs as I do not earn much however I am starting to feel as though my body is telling me there is something seriously wrong.

Answer by Dr Rowena S, MD (doctor) on Fri 27, Nov 2009 08:31pm:

Hi, How are you? It is good that you will be consulting your doctor soon. If you have problems with the cost, this should not be a problem. There are government hospitals that cost less than the private ones. What is important is that we get to the bottom of what is causing your abnormal and irregular bleeding. Abnormal or dysfunctional bleeding may be caused by changes in hormone levels, endometrial hyperplasia, uterine fibroids, uterine polyps, adenomyosis, thyroid problems, use of pills or certain medications, possible cancer, infection, stress, change in diet or exercise routine, recent weight loss or weight gain, and other gynecological issues. Do keep us posted on your check-up. Take care and best regards.
