What should your cervix feel like when you're pregnant? I am 18 weeks pregnant and I am worried as it feels quite soft (like your lips) and seems to have a slight opening (admits finger tip). I've also been geting some occasional cervical and high vaginal pain in the form of sharp pulsing pain. Swabs have come back clear and there is no evidence of problems on speculum examination.

Hi! The cervix, which is normally firm and feels like the tip of your nose becomes soft in pregnancy. It takes a bluish red tinge. The opening or the os is tightly closed to prevent miscarriage and remains so until labor starts. (http://www.sisterzeus.com/cervob.htm) The cause of worry in your case is that it admits one finger. This may be called cervical insufficiency and you may need a cervical circlage operation. (http://www.merck.com/mmpe/sec18/ch263/ch263c.html) Since there is deep vaginal pain, either there is a low lying placenta or some PID (pelvic inflammatory disease) that is causing it. Please discuss this with your obstetrician and see what she thinks. Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

Thanks so much for your quick reply - I have been so worried. Just to clarify it doesn't admit a finger, I can just put the very end of my finger in the opening -it wouldn't go any further unless I were to force it - which obviously I won't. Does this situation hold the same risks? Thanks

Hi! Just look at the picture of the cervix in the link I sent. What you could be feeling is the lips of cervix with a depression in the center. This is what you must be feeling with the finger tip. In such a case, there is no cervical insufficiency but a normal finding. Also if a gynecologist examined you, then the chances of insufficiency are less. The feel of cervix as I said earlier is normal. Some deep seated vaginal pain is at times felt in pregnancy. You can mention this to your gynecologist when you next see her. Hope this puts your mind at ease. Since I have not examined you, I would be more comfortable if you bring your concerns to the notice of your gynecologist too—regarding the tip of finger somewhat going in even though I feel the tip is going into the depression formed by the lips. Take care!

Hello, Welcome to the forum and thanks for posting on it. I agree with DR Kokil that the depression that you have felt is the external os which is felt normally. In pregnancy, the cervix undergoes a marked softening which is referred to as the Goodell's sign." Regarding the vaginal and cervical pain, during pregnancy this is a very common feature because of increase of hormones, additional weight, poor posture like excessive standing and bending over and little rest and more stress during this period. You can apply warm compresses, sleep on your left side and use a support pillow under your knees . If the symptoms persist then you may need anti inflammatory medicines for which I would suggest you to consult your gynecologist. I sincerely hope this helps. Please do let us know if there are further queries. Take care.
