Withdrawal bleeding on the pill, is this an indicator that the pill is working properly?

Hi, I know that the withdrawal bleeding that you experience every month during the placebo week of the pill is not a true period but is a fake period brought on by the change in hormone levels as a result of not taking the pill for that week. My question is, if you are pregnant would you still experience "withdrawal bleeding" during the placebo week? Also is regular withdrawal bleeding everymonth during the placebo week a good indicator that the birth control pills are working well i.e. preventing ovulation? Thanks Shaz.

Answer by Dr Rowena S, MD (doctor) on Fri 27, Mar 2009 02:19am:

During pregnancy, you will experience implantation bleeding and not withdrawal bleeding. This results from the implantation of the zygote in the wall of the uterus. If you have regular withdrawal bleeding, this is a good indicator that the birth control pills are working well thus, pregnancy is not considered. But if you have any doubt, a pregnancy test will help rule this out.
