Answer by Dr Rowena S, MD (doctor) on Fri 06, Mar 2009 08:49pm:

Cysts are fluid-filled structures and may go down on their own. Cysts are not that uncommon during pregnancy and majority of ovarian masses found during pregnancy are benign. On the other hand, Down syndrome is caused by abnormal cell division and results in extra genetic material There are no known behavioral or environmental factors that cause Down syndrome and it is not inherited. Talk to your sister's doctor about this to ease her worries and to know more about her diagnosis and what kind of cyst it is.
