Asked by Unregistered (Female; 36; 16478; i am healthy for my age. in the last two years i have had three abnormal paps. Yesterday i had a 4th pap done and do not have results of that yet. when there talked to the doctor about periods changing in the last 6 months to being worse then they normally are. my periods have been the same since i started them at the age of 13. they are now heavy and painful and last longer then normal. she did a full exam and stated that my untus was enlarged. she has ordered an ultra sound to be done. i had my tubes tied 13 and a half years ago; Relevant drugs:iam not taking any meds ) on Tue 03, Mar 2009 01:06pm

could you tell me what would cause an enlarged utrus? can a pregnacy do that or a tubal pregnacy? if pregnant can you still have periods?

Answer by Dr Noopur S, MD (doctor) on Wed 04, Mar 2009 11:49pm:

No one can have periods during pregnancy. Vaginal bleeding during pregnancy indicates miscarriage. There can be many reasons for the uterus to enlarge apart from pregnancy like endometriosis and fibroids. If there were fibroids they can be detected by internal exam and abdominal ultrasound. The possibility of endometriosis needs to be looked into.
