The other situations in which tender nipples can occur are before periods, after menopause, when on birth control pills, stress which can lead to hormonal fluctuations, intake of too much caffeine, and also due to friction from clothes. If these conditions are ruled out, it would be better to see your doctor for examination of any lumps, inflammation or discharge in the breasts.
