i took a digital pregnancy test on 25th June and it said i was two-three weeks pregnant, by a doctors prediction I would now be about 5 weeks. I drank every Friday until the friday before found out so probably three fridays quite a bit, would this of harmed the baby? or is it to soon. I have read books that say teratogens don't really start harming til three weeks. I am slightly confused by whether the digital or doctor prediction one to go by. Will my baby be okat?

Hi! First of all congratulations! In all probability your baby will be fine. Contrary to most beliefs, generally a growing fetus is not harmed by maternal environment in the first 4-6 weeks. Hence generally any drugs, alcohol etc taken during this time does not affect the baby. If at all the baby is affected, it is due to congenital defects or genetic ones. Hence, alcohol, which usually starts acting in second trimester by causing growth retardation. Hence do not worry much. But to be on very safe side, please inform your gynecologist. In all probability you will give birth to a healthy baby. All the best! Please feel free to ask anything else you may want to know. Take care!

Hello, Welcome to the forum. Dr Kokil is right in saying that chances are more likely regarding a healthy pregnancy in your case. Basically alcohol causes fetal alcohol syndrome in fetus and it develops in some unborn babies when the mother drinks excessive alcohol during pregnancy. We cannot predict any damage at this stage but with regular ultrasounds and investigations, if any damage is caused, it can be visualized. The most important effect of alcohol on the unborn fetus is on the central nervous system. I suggest you to consult a gynecologist and get regular ultrasounds done. It will also clear any doubts about the gestational age because it is the most accurate method of calculating it rather than digital pregnancy tests or manual examination. I hope it helps. Take care and please do keep us posted in case you have any additional doubts. Kind regards.
