irregular periods

	april 26th of this year i had my second child, my first was born on jan 16th of last year. i have been on birth control since i had my second child and about 2 months ago i started having irregular periods. i got a period my normal and then i had sex with my partner two weeks later and got it back that morning. had it for about 9 days and then had sex again and like the last time it came back again for a day and then had sex again and its back again and the pattern stays the same. it is a brown heavy discharge very little bright red in the very beginning. i have been having cramping in the pelvic area and lower back pain. already done a pregnancy test and it is negative. what could be the problem?

	Answer by Dr Bhupinder K, MD (doctor) on Sat 20, Sep 2008 08:09pm: Hello, Intermenstrual bleeding may be due to many causes.In your case,as it was after intercourse then chances of genital infection or cervical polyps are there.They are tiny, harmless growths on the outer surface of the cervix and can bleed after intense sexual intercourse.Stress and anxiety can also cause intermenstrual bleeding. Other causes may be hormonal imbalance,stress and anxiety, uterine fibroids,miscarriage after a pregnancy,ectopic pregnancy,fluctuation in hormone levels,IUD(intrauterine device)use,use of anticoagulant drugs and hypothyroidism. Pls get yourself evaluated by a gynecologist as pelvic examination and investigations are required to confirm a diagnosis.Heavy bleeding can lead to anemia and chances of hemorrhagic shock.So pls consult soon.
