I take clonazepam and trileptal on a regular basis. I just found out I am pregnat, probably a few weeks along. What are the risks? and what precautions should I take until I have the chance to talk to my doctor?

Answer by Dr Bhupinder K, MD (doctor) on Mon 27, Apr 2009 11:39pm:

Hello, As you are pregnant so pls inform your doctor and stop clonazepam and Trileptal under his guidance.Clonazepam is assumed to be capable of causing an increased risk of congenital abnormalities when administered to a pregnant woman during the first trimester. Oxycarbazepine(Trileptal)is closely related structurally to carbamazepine, which is considered to be teratogenic in humans, although there are no adequate and well-controlled clinical studies of Trileptal in pregnant women. Hope it helps.Take care and regards.
