Hi,
Round ligament syndrome and leg pains are common complaints of pregnancy, affecting the sides of your body and
backs of your legs. As the uterus grows during early pregnancy, the round ligaments on either side of the
uterus begin to stretch. As the ligaments lengthen and thicken, they cause pain down your sides to the groin.
The pain is most noticeable when you make quick movements, which stretch the ligaments, and while
uncomfortable, does not pose any risk to you or your baby.
While there is no treatment, the pains can be effectively relieved during pregnancy. To minimize the pains in
your sides and groin, avoid quick movements such as getting up too quickly, that will stretch the ligaments.
Standing or sitting for long periods can aggravate the ligaments. Stretching exercise can provide relief for
many women. Try supporting the uterus when lying on your side, by placing a small cushion or pillow under your
abdomen. It is important that you discuss pain relief options with your doctor. In a few weeks time, this will
go away on its own.
Take care and regards.
