prolonged menstral periods



    
Asked by angie (Female; 40; not hypertensive, nothing serious apart from once in a while headace; Relevant drugs:mostly takes water sometimes panadol ) on Mon 16, Feb 2009 02:30am

Goodmorning Doctor, I am aged 40 years and was on a pill for a long time which i stopped taking last year October. I havent had my monthly periods for three (3) months, then now i have these scantty periods for two weeks, though sometimes heavy. normally my periods only go upto three days, what could be the problem with me?

Hello, Looking at your age,irregular menstrual cycle are very common at this age and can be due to premenopause.During premenopause, the production of most of the reproductive hormones, including the estrogens, progesterone and testosterone, diminishes and becomes more irregular, often with wide and unpredictable fluctuations in levels,resulting in various symptoms;some of which you are experiencing.I would suggest an evaluation by a gynecologist and starting with the hormone replacement therapy.Best..
